International Criminal Court, 79 Countries against Trump’s sanctions but Italy does not sign..

Security U.S. World

The UN stands united against the President of the United States, but Italy withdraws and does not join the united appeal. A few hours after the executive order signed by Donald Trump against the Hague tribunal, the EU and the United Nations condemn the tycoon’s sanctions.

“I note with deep regret the issuance by the United States of an executive order aimed at imposing sanctions on officials of the International Criminal Court, undermining the independence and impartiality of the Court and depriving millions of innocent victims of atrocities, justice and hope”, said the president of the ICC, Tomoko Akane , in a statement.

Trump’s Executive Order

Overnight, Trump signed the executive order against the Hague Tribunal, “guilty” of targeting the United States, Israel and its allies. The order includes financial sanctions and a visa ban for all Court officials involved in investigations into the United States and its allies. The text released by the White House prohibits entry into the United States to ICC executives, employees and agents, as well as their immediate family members and anyone believed to have assisted the Court’s investigative work. The decree also includes a freeze on all assets held in the United States by these same people. The names of the people involved were not immediately released.

The ICC’s response

A position to which the ICC responds by stressing that the Court “firmly supports its staff and is committed to continuing to provide justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of atrocities around the world, in all situations that arise”. And in a note published on the website, the ICC calls on “the 125 Member States, civil society and all nations of the world to stand together for justice and fundamental human rights”.

“As atrocities continue to plague the world, affecting the lives of millions of innocent children, women and men, the Court has become indispensable,” said President Tomoko Akane. “It represents the most significant legacy of the immense suffering inflicted on civilians by world wars, the Holocaust, genocide, violence and persecution. When most of the world’s states came together to draft the Rome Statute, they realized the dream of many women and men. Today, the ICC hears cases arising from a variety of situations around the world, in strict accordance with the provisions of the Rome Statute.”
