Somalia lifts Fertilizer ban to boost Agriculture and enhance Food Security..

Food Security Somalia news

Somalia’s cabinet has lifted its ban on chemical fertilizers in a bid to boost agricultural productivity, combat food insecurity, and reduce the devastating impact of climate change on the country’s farming sector, The decision, announced Thursday, is part of a broader government strategy to revitalize the agriculture sector, which supports over 70% of the population and contributes nearly 65% of Somalia’s GDP..

Officials believe reintroducing chemical fertilizers will help replenish depleted soils, increase crop yields, and foster economic growth in rural areas, The policy comes at a critical time for Somalia, where prolonged droughts, desert locust infestations, and underdeveloped infrastructure have left millions dependent on humanitarian aid. By lifting the ban, the government aims to reduce reliance on food imports and build resilience against climate-related shocks.

Chemical fertilizers are known to improve crop yields significantly, but their misuse can lead to soil degradation, water contamination, and environmental harm. To mitigate these risks, the Somali government plans to introduce strict regulations, promote sustainable farming practices, and provide technical training to farmers.

The policy shift aligns with the African Union’s Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), encouraging sustainable agricultural growth and regional collaboration. Partnerships with international donors and NGOs are expected to drive the funding and implementation of these measures.
