(BREAKING): Today, the administration of U.S.

Government sanctioned 7 people over Somalia’s parliament votes to extend president’s mandate for another two years. The US government today imposed restrictive muesures on seven individuals responsible for the decision to extend Farmajo’ s term another two years.

Four of the seven persons targeted belong to key Farmajo government individuals. (1) Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, Ex president of Somalia. (2) Fahad Yasin Haji Dahir, Director General of NISA. (3) Mohamed Mursal Sheikh, Lower house speaker (4) Abdirahman Dualeh Beileh.

The restrictive measures introduced today include a travel ban and an asset freeze. The travel ban impedes those listed from entering and transiting through US territory, while the asset freeze covers the funds or economic resources in the US of the listed persons. In addition, US citizens and companies are forbidden from making funds available to the listed individuals and their entities.

Today’s sanctions, together with the withholding of financial assistance going to the government, the freezing of all assistance to government bodies that may be seen as legitimising Farmajo Government and intense, ongoing diplomatic outreach, represent the US’s robust response to the illegitimate over extenstion of Farmajo term and the brutal repression by the Farmajo Regime against peaceful protesters.

The US Government will continue to review all of its policy options, including additional restrictive measures against economic entities owned these imdividuals. At the same time, the US aims to ensure that its measures do not have an adverse effect on the general population. The US remains a steadfast supporter of the Somali people and of the country’s democratic transition.

Pre-existing US restrictive measures also remain in place. These include an embargo on arms and equipment that can be used for internal repression and a prohibition on military training with the Somali National Army. Measures also include the designation of 5 persons for atrocities against the civilians. Combined with the new designations, this brings the total number of listed persons to 12.

The names of the 12 persons concerned, have been published in the Office of the Treasury Department.
